Publishing – Submissions to Sleepers and the Sleepers Almanac

Almanac submissions are now closed

Sumbissions for the sixth edition of the Sleepers Almanac are now closed. We're very busy reading, so stay tuned for more info on the next call.

2010 sees a BIG and VERY exciting development happening with the Almanac; we're turning it into an iPhone App. While we will also be printing the book, beautiful and hardcopy as ever, we will also be launching it as an electronic book, an App, which will come with lots of interesting features not previously seen in a book. Cause a book's a book. And we love them. But we also love the possibilities of making the Almanac a digital experience.

We'll give you lots of updates on how the development of the App is going. In the meantime, get writing! Submissions close February 12.

Make sure you are on our email list, & when you get in touch, let us know how you heard of us and which state you are in here. And to get a sense of what we like to publish, make sure you read an Almanac.

What we like reading

If you are uncertain about whether we will like your work, give us a call or email us. In addition to those who have appeared at the Salons, our favourite writers include (this is not a definitive list).

Some of our recent favourite books include (this is also not a definitive list):

  • The Millenium Series (Girl with Dragon Tattoo, etc), Stieg Larrson
  • Transition, Iain Banks
  • Little White Slips, Karen Hitchcock
  • Generation A, Douglas Coupland

    Manuscript submissions

Once you have a complete manuscript, send it to us, as per the guidelines below. NB: Do not submit to Sleepers until your manuscript is finished, & please don't send us drafts. First, read a book that we have published so that you get a sense of us. Then email us a file no larger than 2 megs here. Send us the first 30 pages of your completed manuscript, along with a synopsis, and a short author's bio, all in Word .doc format. Let us know how you heard of Sleepers, and how long your complete manuscript is. We are not in a position to accept submissions outside of these guidelines. Please do not send an enquiry email asking if we are interested in seeing any of your manuscript; just email the synopsis, the first 30 pages, and a short author bio - all as Word documents. Do not send hard copies.

We are accepting works by local, national and international writers.

    Feedback

Due to time constraints, Sleepers are no longer conducting manuscript appraisals. For appraisals, see your local writers' centre. Manuscripts submitted to Sleepers will not receive critical feedback.

NB: Sleepers reserves the right to, at any point in proceedings, change our mind on the way in which we receive submissions, and the nature of the submissions that we receive.
